Patients frequently ask how long it takes to get relief following a chiropractic adjustment.  There are two questions built into the query.  The main question they are asking is “when can I expect some relief?”  But another question is “when can benefits be measured?”  I have written plenty of articles addressing the first question.  Today, I read a research article addressing the second question.

In the research study, patients were provided an MRI evaluation immediately before and after chiropractic adjustments.  The MRI results showed improved gapping and biomechanic mobility after the chiropractic adjustments.

Facet joint lumbar spine

The small facet joint showed improved gapping following adjustments

The biomechanic joint gapping is important for joint health.  We know that joints  which are not moving tend to develop scar tissue and the articular cartilage on the surface of the joints become pitted.  This can lead to arthritis and inflammation.  With this new research, we can demonstrate immediate improvement in the microcosm of the joint.

One critical note, not mentioned in the article, is the inherent benefit to routine chiropractic check-ups.  Seeing a chiropractor for spinal adjustments–even if you are not in pain– can be helpful by keeping the joints properly gapped.  So treat yourself so some health and schedule an appointment with your chiropractor.
