Forward Head Posture

St George Chiropractor

Anterior Carriage of the Head also known as Forward Head Posture can cause stress to the joints of the neck and lead to chronic injury of the posture muscles of the neck.

A well respected anatomist and spinal physiologist Ibrahim Adalbert Kapandji wrote “For every inch of Forward Head Posture, it can increase the weight of the head on the spine by an additional 10 pounds.” Physiology of Joints, Vol. 3.

The change in weight bearing causes the muscles on the back to the neck to become weak through fatigue.  The chronic muscle tone promotes trigger point formation as well as irritation on the small muscles on the back of the skull.  This leads to headaches.

Thankfully, at the Innova Pain Clinic, we have treatment protocols that help to address this posture defect and promote stronger tissues.

Even slight anterior carriage of the head can result in improper balance and muscle tone, leading to neck pain and headaches.
